Boiler Room
Boiler Room (2000)

IMDB rating: 6.80

Plot: A young man has dropped out of Queens College but desperately wants to please his father, a federal judge who’s harsh with his son. At his father’s insistence, Seth Davis closes a casino he operates in his own house, mostly for college students. Thinking he’ll please dad, he takes a job in a small brokerage house, an hour from Manhattan, where trainees make cold calls to lists of well-paid men, and then apply high-pressure tactics to sell initial public offerings exclusive to the firm. He’s terrific at sales. Once training is over, the pay is phenomenal, and Seth wonders why. Curiosity leads him to ethical dilemmas, encounters with the Feds, and new territory with his father.

When wiring my house for CAT5, how can I run the cable from the basement to the main and second floors?
I have decided to wire my house for ethernet, so that I have no trouble streaming 1080p video from a centralized server, which I would like to have in the basement. How would I go about getting the cables to the main floor and second floor, and then, from that point, to the necessary rooms?

I’ve been reading guides online, and some recommend a main floor coat closet with a conduit. This is doable, as behind the baseboard (I’m doing floors so these aren’t installed) there is a small open space to the boiler room in the basement. However, from this point, there are two problems. How do I run the cable to the two or three points I want on the main floor, and how do I go up through the ceiling to the second floor? Right above the coat closet is a hallway.

If I can find a way to get upstairs, maybe I can go all the way to the attic, and distribute upstairs that way. But the main floor is still a mystery to me.

Finally, do builders use any conduit for telephone/coaxial cable wiring? I have outlets for those in most rooms, I wonder if it would be possible to use that to my advantage.

Thanks so much.

sometimes you can use a plumbing pipe chase to get all the way to the attic and distribute from there. if you have a basement you should be able to run along the plumbing pipe to the attic as it is vented through the roof. i have done this many times fishing electrical wiring.

Run the wires along the basement ceiling and then up through a hole next to wall where you want. Find a hollow wall that goes to the second floor and then to the attic. Come back down the walls where you want a terminal. Maybe you can find a spot where plumbing goes all the way up and use the hollow space.

Lost in Translation
Lost in Translation (2003)

IMDB rating: 7.90

Plot: Bob Harris is an American film actor, far past his prime. He visits Tokyo to appear in commercials, and he meets Charlotte, the young wife of a visiting photographer. Bored and weary, Bob and Charlotte make ideal if improbable traveling companions. Charlotte is looking for “her place in life,” and Bob is tolerating a mediocre stateside marriage. Both separately and together, they live the experience of the American in Tokyo. Bob and Charlotte suffer both confusion and hilarity due to the cultural and language differences between themselves and the Japanese. As the relationship between Bob and Charlotte deepens, they come to the realization that their visits to Japan, and one another, must soon end. Or must they?
